Turf Molasses

Soil fungi and bacteria break down organic matter and help to recycle the nutrients that it contains.  They also need these nutrients for their own growth and can compete with plant roots for nitrogen and other nutrients.  The rate of growth of microorganisms is influenced by the amount and availability of carbohydrate and nitrogenous material in the organic matter.  This is often expressed as a C:N ratio.

• High carbohydrate materials promote the growth of microbes which use up the limited supply of nitrogen
• Microbes grow faster and put more demand on the nitrogen supply if the organic material is easily degraded (herbaceous plant material) than if it is relatively inert (woody plant material)
