Kelp or seaweed products have been grouped with humic substances because they also stimulate plant growth. Some products on the market exploit a potential synergism between the two products.
Kelp products contain the plant growth hormones auxins, cytokinins and gibberellins, which control shoot and root growth, and cell elongation and division. Perhaps of equal importance is the presence of an extensive list of minor elements, sugars, vitamins, proteins and amino acids that could directly aid the plant, and the microbes in and outside the rhizosphere.
The effects of both kelp and humate products are very sensitive to the rate and mode of application. An overapplication of either product could have negative consequences.
